Chosen by God!
As members of Christ’s church, we should do all we can to maintain unity among ourselves as we continue our spiritual journey. Jesus, Himself, prayed for us to be one. This was so important to Him that He compared this unity to the unity He shares with His Father and Holy Spirit. His desire is for us to be one. As His redeemed people we must do all we can to maintain unity. We can’t speak a message of love and forgiveness to the world while not living it within the community of believers. How can we love unbelievers if we’re not loving each other? What message does our behavior reflect to the world?
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.” (Matthew 5:43-45 NKJV)
If we are to love our enemies, and pray for those that persecute us how much more are we to love and pray for each other?
“Jesus was matter-of-fact: ‘Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, 'Go jump in the lake'—no shuffling or shilly-shallying—and it's as good as done. That's why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you'll get God's everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it's not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.’" (Mark 11:22-25 MSG)
As believers we are to set the example for walking in love, dealing with offense, offering forgiveness, admitting we’re wrong, trying to make things right and so much more. This is how others will recognize the love of God that is available to all of us. We must remember that people watch what we do more than listen to what we say.
Unity should always be our goal because without it there is no love being displayed. Jesus said they will know we are His by our love. We can't act like the world and expect them to want to know the Jesus we profess to love.
It takes spiritual maturity to confront someone who has offended you and try to make peace and restore unity. Most would prefer to retaliate, spread rumors, and cause disunity.
It's also hard to try to fix an offense you know about, especially when the person(s) involved won't talk to you. All you can do is give it, and them, to God trusting Him to touch all hearts involved and bring healing.
