The Lord's Prayer

Chosen by God!

When we worship God, we should sincerely ask Him to protect us from all evil influences. In Psalms 140 and 141, David, asked God to protect him from evil people who would harm him and to keep him from indulging in their sins. We can do the same thing. Jesus teaches us the elements of prayer, in the model prayer:

“Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:9-13 HCSB)

It’s not just the words that makes this prayer heartfelt it is the imagery and the positioning that makes this prayer a creative and personal way to worship.

We begin with remembering who God is and honoring Him. He is great. He is also our Father! We’re His children and as such can come boldly to Him in prayer. It reminds us that this life is about His Kingdom, not us having a kingdom. We get down to the nuts and bolts and remember we must surrender to His will. We are reminded that He provides daily and we should only focus on one day, today. We are reminded of the power and purpose of forgiveness. We’ve received forgiveness so we must give forgiveness. We can ask for his protection and deliverance from the evil one. After understanding His position and our need of Him we end the same way we began, by remembering God’s greatness.

We can creatively pray this model prayer that Jesus taught by praying the essence and spirit of it. This prayer is a powerful reminder of our position in Christ – God is our Father and we are His children. He wants to hear what we have to say. As His children we want to speak to Him, praise Him, and bring honor to Him.

Let me end with the model prayer from The Message Version of the Bible:

“Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are. Set the world right; Do what’s best—as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You’re in charge! You can do anything you want! You’re ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes.” (Matthew 6:9-13 MSG)
