Chosen by God!
Moses (to God): Who am I to confront Pharaoh and lead Israel’s children out of Egypt?
Eternal One: Do not fear, Moses. I will be with you every step of the way, and this will be the sign to you that I am the One who has sent you: after you have led them out of Egypt, you will return to this mountain and worship God.
Moses: Let’s say I go to the people of Israel and tell them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to rescue you,” and then they reply, “What is His name?” What should I tell them then?
Eternal One: I AM WHO I AM. This is what you should tell the people of Israel: “I AM has sent me to rescue you.” (Exodus 3:11-14 The Voice)
In Moses’ conversation with God we see Moses’ fears; fear of inadequacy, acceptance, how to answer questions. He immediately focused on what he could not do and why he could not do it. In that same conversation we see God address each fear and encourage Him by promising that he would not do this alone because He was with him. He made it plain, that not only was He with Him but He would be with Him every step of the way. Then He makes a promise that he will worship at this destination. (Note worship in this context, in the original Hebrew is ʻâbad which means to serve; labour, bring to pass; execute; cause to; make to; service; worshipper.)
I took a closer look at the meaning of Moses’ name and it’s interesting -Môsheh; drawing out (of the water), i.e. rescued; Mosheh, the Israelite lawgiver:—Moses.
Isn’t that exactly what God did for Moses? He drew out of him what was always in him – leadership and later we’ll learn a very intimate relationship with God. God did the very things for him that he would use him to do for Israel, he drew him out, rescued him, made him His spokesman, and gave him the law. God chose Israel, drew them out to be His people, rescuing them from bondage and gave them His laws.
And God wants to do these same things for us! He chosen us securing our heritage as His children through the blood of Jesus. He draws us out and rescues us from sin, through the blood of Jesus. He’s given us His grace, mercy and love, seeing us as righteous through the blood of Jesus. He’s equipped us to live this life as His child, victoriously through the blood of Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When God calls us His own, gives us an assignment, He equips us to be who we truly are, in Him, and do what He’s called us to do.
When we remember Who He revealed Himself to be – I AM WHO I AM, it’s a reminder that His I AM is whatever we need.
