Chosen by God!
We are to do what we can to help the poor, realizing this is serving God. The Word tells us in Proverbs 19:17:
“Kindness to the poor is a loan to the Lord, and He will give a reward to the lender.”
When we help the poor, who cannot repay us, we can rest assured that God sees and will reward us. This should not be the reason to help the poor, however it encourages us that God cares about the poor and uses us to be a blessing to them. We must remember that anything that will get done on earth is done through people. God moves on the hearts of people to bless other people. We are His hands and feet. He gives us the direction and we fill out the command. Sadly, many do not heed the voice of God.
It is important for a church to have a proper system in place for determining if those asking for help are acting responsibly in meeting their daily needs. While our goal is to help them through the challenge we must also equip them to become self-sufficient. As stewards of the resources God has blessed us with we must make sure we use these resources wisely. Sadly there are those who are unwilling to help themselves and look for an easy way out. We must make sure we are not being taking advantage of in this area.
The church started with believers, “having all things in common.” They helped one another. Unfortunately we’ve moved from that model and church is more of a corporation with a focus on making money and not saving souls or impacting lives. The church as a whole could eradicate homelessness, and hunger but don’t do it. They, like many others believe, that’s the government’s job. Yet this is not what the Word tells us. When we truly love one another then we care whether they have a place to live, food on their table, and clothes to wear. I often wonder, would Jesus recognize church today as His church, doing what He commanded us to do? I don’t think so and it breaks my heart.
