Chosen by God!
When we select leaders for the church, we are to focus on internal spiritual qualities. Some people have become very adept at being who people want them to be. They can adapt to situations by acting the right way and saying the right things. I’m reminded of this Scripture:
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord sees, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.” (I Samuel 16:7 HCSB)
We tend to go with what we see and believe to be true. It’s wise to use biblical standards for selecting leaders. I believe using both the external and biblical standard weighted heavily on the latter, we will make God choices when choosing leaders. We must not mistake being talented for being gifted to do certain things. We can’t let a need in the church dictate who we choose as leaders. Just because someone may be good at something doesn’t mean it’s their assignment. Additionally, the very person you overlook while determining they aren’t qualified may in fact be the best qualified because God has anointed them to do the job. Do not discount the anointing of God!
I am reminded that in Acts 1 where they prayed before choosing an apostle to replace Judas.
“So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed, “You, Lord, know the hearts of all; show which of these two You have chosen to take the place in this apostolic service that Judas left to go to his own place.” Then they cast lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was numbered with the 11 apostles. (Acts 1:23-26 HCSB)
Even after considering the external and applying biblical standards we should fervently seek God before appointing leaders. The process may take time but you’re assured of getting the right leadership in place. Bad leadership is worse than having no leadership!
