HOLY WEEK - IT'S NOT JUST ANOTHER WEEK

Chosen by God!

“Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, ‘Sit here while I go over there to pray.’ He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, ‘My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’ He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, ‘My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.’ Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, ‘Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!’” (Matthew 26:36-41 NLT)

Jesus is in Gethsemane, feeling all the anguish and distress that He is going to bear by taking on the sin of the entire world. He knows this means momentary separation from God. He is grief-stricken and crushed. He knows what is coming next, so He asks His disciples to come and minister to Him in prayer.

Jesus is wrestling with the cup that God, His Father, has prepared for Him. Yet He chooses to drink from the cup of sin and death. Even in His torment, He still bowed to the will of God for Him and, ultimately, for us. At that moment, it was about obedience to God, us, and the plan God had to redeem us for Himself. Jesus selflessly gave Himself to do the will and pleasure of His Father. The cross was His destination, and He never lost sight of it.
