Encouragement Nugget - Be A Person of Commitment!

Chosen by God!

But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” (Ruth 1:16-17 NLT)

Ruth lets Naomi know that she does not want to turn back but wants to go forward with her. She’s essentially making a covenant with Ruth. Although a Moabite, she declares Ruth’s God will be her God. This is definitely a heartfelt plea. It also speaks to the life Naomi must have lived before Ruth for her commitment to be this deep. It also speaks to the heart of God as the Ruth becomes a part of the lineage of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Covenant means something to God so we must be careful to make sure that they mean something to us. When we give our word on something we must keep it. Therefore it is wise to consider carefully what you give your word about. Don’t give it casually.

This story made me look at my life. What heartfelt pleas have I made? This is something we should all consider. It also reminded me of the covenant of marriage – “until death do we part.” That’s a commitment we make when getting married and should not be made lightly.

There also a commitment we make when we interact with others. It’s a commitment of honor, integrity, and from a believer’s standpoint its commitment to living a life that reflects the character of God before others. We should strive to leave an imprint of love wherever we go and in whatever we do. This brings glory to God which should be our aim at all times.

Jesus prayed this to the Father and it should become our heart’s desire while on earth:

“I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4 NLT)
