"Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective." (Colossians 3:2 MSG)
The Lord dropped this in my Spirit while teaching Bible study a few years ago and it's worth meditating on again. As we grow in our walk with the Lord there's always something more we can learn. We see differently based on where we are and what we're going through, or the lessons we have learned.
I was talking about Peter walking on water. (See Matthew 14:22-33 for the full story.) Peter got out of the boat while the other eleven disciples stayed in the boat. As long as his eyes were on Jesus, Peter walked on water. Once he took his eyes off Jesus and started looking at what was going on around him, he began to sink. Yet, in sinking he called out to Jesus who saved him!
There's a lesson here for us. No matter what is going on around us when we keep our eyes on Jesus, we have the victory. It's when we take our eyes off of Him and start considering what's going on around us that we are on our own.
Staying in the boat represents using, and trusting, my resources. Getting out of the boat represents attaching myself to, and trusting, Jesus and His resources!
POW!
Guess who is getting out of the boat. Yep, me! It's always safer to be wherever God is no matter what we see or feel. What about you? Are you willing to get out of the boat and walk into what God has for you?
REMEMBER THIS:
Sometimes you have to step out in order to step in or step up. Just ask Peter. He stepped out of the boat. You can't walk on the water from the comfort of the boat! Sometimes you have to leave what's comfortable to do what seems impossible. Just remember - Jesus is right there in the middle of the impossible. Keep your eyes on Him!
A word of encouragement from the Word of God:
"People with their minds set on you, you keep completely whole, Steady on their feet, because they keep at it and don’t quit. Depend on God and keep at it because in the Lord God you have a sure thing.." (Isaiah 26:3-4 MSG)
